Font Notes:
Medieval baptismal font listed with measurements in Ligtenberg (1915). In Drake (2002) as a baptismal font of the "Bentheim School, Berge b. Type II", a group of fonts that includes those at Alfhausen, Badbergen, Bippen, Borken, Heek, Lathen, Nordherringen, Salzbergen, Schapen, Schepsdorf, Südkirchen, Utrecht (Katharinenkonvent), Weerselo, Wettringen and Wissel. The fonts in this group, adds Drake (ibid.) can be characterised as being similar to those in the Berge a. Type I, "but here the fan-frieze is interrupted, not in any consistent pattern, by arcading, frontal human heads and rosettes. The arcading may be round-headed (Weerselo) or horseshoe (Alfhausen) [...] or consist merely of columns without arches (Südkirchen); it may be empty or may contain heads or rosettes." No font cover present, but the upper rim of the basin shos evidence of earlier anchors for an old font cover. [NB: a series of photographs in the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed [cf. Images area] shows how often the font was moved about inside the church, none of which positions would have been the original one in medieval times]. [cf. BSI entry for Vroomshop for a later font possibly from Weerselo originally]
