The above article refers to a discrepancy in dating this fragment of a Bentheimer sandstone font, as some read 1123 and others 1323, the dating of the inscription itself being questioned, as it appears to have been carved in the 16th century]. Further, the article indicates that the font was withdrawn from the church at the time of the Reformation, and taken to Veenhuizen, a town just southwest of Onstwedde, where it was used a a water trough for horses, and its upper rim for sharpening metal tools; the owner of the font offered to return it to the church at Onstwedde in 1950, but retracted his offer when the church council indicated that it would not be restored to its baptismal function; the font was finally accepted at Sint-Nicolaaskerk under the stated condition in 1989, and it was used to baptise three children ["drie kinderen"] in 1991. Unless the font was totally re-carved, the decoration suggests a 14th-century dating; the inscription may have been added later. A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 16 November 2022) informed: "The current Gothic church building of Onstwedde was built around 1500. The tower, which is more than 41 meters high, is at least a century and a half older than the church. Until 1568 Onstwedde belonged ecclesiastically to the diocese of Osnabrück. The secular authority was in the hands of the Prince Bishop of Münster. The parish priest was appointed by the abbot of Corvey Abbey near Höxter. The current church building is believed to have had one or more predecessors, the oldest of which must have dated from the 10th or 11th century. Around 1150 the church of Unsvede is mentioned for the first time. It is unlikely that the church was originally dedicated to Nicholas, as the veneration of Nicholas only emerged in the 12th century, when the church of Onstwedde probably existed longer. According to recent research, the church was originally dedicated to James the Greater. In the church is the basin of a Gothic baptismal font made of Bentheimer sandstone, probably from 1524. The dating is controversial, local historiography also mentions the years 1124 and 1324. However, the Gothic style and the use of a vernacular inscription contradict the older dates. The basin is decorated at the bottom in a tracery pattern in a three-pass motif, a Gothic characteristic. The geometric braiding pattern along the top edge is still reminiscent of the decoration of Romanesque Bentheimer baptismal fonts. A text has been carved into three sides of the basin, which is now heavily weathered. Redmer Alma deciphered it as follows: “this uat heft geue(n) / simen Johan / int iaer M CV en(de) xxiii”, or “this font was given by Simon Johan in the year 1524”. The name Simon Johan and the year are not certain, but they are the most likely reading. The transition from Catholicism to Protestantism in 1594 went fairly smoothly in Onstwedde. However, quite late after Onstwedde had joined the Reformation, the baptismal font was removed from the church. It ended up with the Trenning family in the hamlet of Veenhuizen, just southwest of Onstwedde. There it first stood behind the house of the family farm, where it was used as a drinking trough for the horses. Later it was placed in a meadow as a drinking trough for the cattle, where it stayed for a few centuries, clearly visible from the road. The basin was also used as a sharpening stone for knives, causing the top edge to become worn down. But in the thirties of the last century, the font was brought closer to home, and placed in the front garden of the farm. When he left the farm in 1950, then-owner B. Trenning presented the baptismal font to the church. Because the church council wanted to place the baptismal font 'only' in the tower, he withdrew his offer. After that it served for many years as a flower planter in front of a bank building, of which H. Trenning was director. To protect the historically important object, it was later placed inside, in the entrance hall of the bank. It was filled with perennials. In 1989 an appointment was made to return it to the church and in 1991 the first three children were baptized in the old baptismal font."
