Font Notes:
A font here is attributed (?) to Jodocus Tauchen [aka Jobst / Jodok / Jost Tauchen] (fl. 1451-1495) is noted in Deutsche Biographie [www.deutsche-biographie.de/sfz82192.html] [accessed 8 November 2015]. Jadwiga Kuczyńska (1999 and 2005) describes the chalice-shaped baptismal font made of bronze by Jodocus in 1475 as a masterpiece: "Les fonts baptismaux de Banskà Bystrica constituent un des chefs-d’œuvre de la fonderie artistique. Avec une rareté inhabituelle, la forme du calice reflète une symétrie et une harmonie de construction extraordinaires. La légèreté de la forme est encore mieux exprimée par une décoration ajourée - la ressemblance avec l’art de l’orfèvrerie y est frappante [...] On a vraiment l'impression que le calice eucharistique s’est transformé en calice baptismal." Kuczyńska (ibid.) gives a detailed description of some of the decorative elements: in nine of the twelve basin compartments are figures of the Apostles (Peter, Paul, John, James), another figure holding a book, and two others without attribute, all these unidentified; the coat of arms of Veit Müllenstein appear three times on the basin. Inscriptions [cf. Inscriptions field] around the basin sides refer to the sacrament of baptism. The font and its cover are illustrated in a Wikimedia digital photograph taken July 2009 by Holdmacska [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Banska_bystrica_baptistry_font.jpg] [accessed 3 October 2025].
