INFORMATION

FontID: 20101NIC
Church/Chapel: Rooms-katholieke parochiekerk Sint-Nicolaaskerk
Church Patron Saints: St. Nicholas of Myra
Church Location: Kerkstratt 14, Sint Nicolaasga, Netherlands
Country Name: Netherlands
Location: Friesland
Directions to Site: Located in the municipality of De Friese Meren
Century and Period: 13th - 14th century, Medieval
Church Notes: late-Gothic church here; present R.C. church is late-19thC -- the Protestant church here is late-18thC (where was the late-medieval church here?)
The present font was cast in bronze in Utrecht in 1932-1933, in the medieval style of the best tradition of Dutch and German font making; it consists of a round slightly tapering basin with large scenes on the sides (the Flood and Noahs ark, Abraham' sacrifice, etc.; it is supported on the shoulders of four large kneeling human figures identified as prophets by scrolls; conical font cover with more biblical scenes on it, a running Latin inscription around the lower rim; round platform with another inscription supports a Baptism of Christ scene as finial; above the finial is a loop to which a crane arm or a pulley end would be attched to raise the cover. Originally from the H. Hartkerk of The Hague; when that church was demolished the font was moved to the late-19th century R.C. Sint-Nicolaaskerk, in Sint Nicolaasga, Friesland. The font is located inside the church, in the baptistery. [NB: there was a late-medieval church in Sint Nicolaasga, but we have no information on the font of that church]
