There is an entry for Whetstone [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP5597/whetstone/] [accessed 28 August 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. White (1863: 769) reports "a new font by T. Cooper, Esq.", which would have been part of the 1856 renovations, but does not mention the earlier font here. Leicestershire Churches [www.leicestershirechurches.co.uk/whetstone-st-peter/] [accessed 28 August 2015] reports: "The font dates from 1856 which replaces a slender based octagonal one."
