Noted in Steensma (1998). The site of the Hervormde gemeente Haamstede [www.hervormdhaamstede.nl/index.html] [accessed 22 June 2015] notes: "Het stenen doopvont, dat rechts van de hoofdingang staat is van Romaanse afkomst en dateert van vóór 1250. Het werd per schip uit de Vogezen naar Haamstede vervoerd en stond indertijd in één van de vele kapelletjes in de omgeving; daarna is het gedegradeerd tot voerbak voor het vee in een weide achter de Brouwerij, genaamd "De witte gekroonde leeuw" en gelukkig op tijd door één der kerkbesturen in 1937 in de kerk geplaatst", which, summarised, informs that this stone font, which is now located by the main entrance of this church, was originally from one of the chapels of the area; it is said to be Romanesque, pre-1250, and to have arrived in the area by ship from the Vosges; it was later used as a feed trough for cattle in a field behind the 'De witte gekroonde leeuw' brewery, and returned to the church in 1937. A fragment of the basin of a baptismal font consisting approximately of the lower half of the basin and underbowl; although very eroded the surface shows some piping decoration on the outside and, more interestingly, concave ribbing on the inside which would date the font to the Gothic period. It is now mounted on a modern brick pedestal. It is not clear why the font has been dated so early in this source, nor how a trip "per schip uit de Vogezen naar Haamstede" was arrived at. This church also has a modern baptismal font made of silver, that was, according to the above source, donated to the church by J.A. Bolle on 4 November 1885. One source, Stenvert et al., in Monumenten in Nederland. Zeeland (Rijksdienst voor de Monumentenzorg, Zeist / Waanders Uitgevers, Zwolle 2003) dates the font to the 16th century ["Tot de inventaris behoren een gotisch doopvont van rode zandsteen (16de eeuw)"]. The entry for this church in Reliwiki [https://reliwiki.nl/index.php/Burgh-Haamstede,_Ring_1_-_Hervormde_Kerk] [accessed 6 Dwcember 2021] reports a fragment of a stone baptismal font: "fragment doopvont van rode zandsteen, and also illustrates the base of another stone font supporting the pulpit, but at all appearances of limestone." Is it possible that the two fragments, basin and base may have belonged together? or are they separate fragments of two fonts, one from Burgh and one from Haamstede?
