The font at Hattem is described in Eyck (1846) with dating in the 12th century. Noted with measurements in Ligtenberg (1915) as a Romanesque baptismal font of sandstone. An e-mail communication of 28 May 2015 from Joost Limburg to BSI notes: "Regnerus Steensma (in his Bentheimer doopvonten en wijwaterbekkens in Nederland, 2007), the font in Hattem dates from sometime between 1220 and 1270. At some stage the font was removed from the church, spending a long time growing flowers in a small public park. In 1891 it was placed back in the church, more precisely in the chancel, behind the chancel screen. [...] In the 1950s it was restored and moved to its current place in the front of the screen. The copper dish dates from that time." The font is of what Drake (2002), in his classification of the Bentheim fonts, categorises as Bentheim School, Type Hage; the Hattem font is somewhat similar to the font at Hage in general shape, tub with a flat underbowl, and it has the vine and fan frieze which decorate the font at Hage; additionally, however, it also has pairs of rope mouldings, like the font Gherde (Type Hage II), and the base of the Hattem font is more like the one at Gherde as well, with the pronounced centre-ring moulding and the rather undefined lions of the base [NB: this font is not noted in Drake (ibid.)]. There is no cover present now, but a copper insert, rather than lining, is in place to receive the baptismal water; it was probably added in the 1950s when the font was restored. The font is now located at the east end, just west of the karge wooden chancel screen.
