Scene Description: Described in the corresponding page in Arteguias [www.arteguias.com/iglesia/santamariaretortillo.htm] [accessed 11 May 2015]: "tímpano que, reaprovechado y empotrado encima de esta puerta ofrece un relieve con una iconografía muy interesante: Un grifo a la izquierda y un león alado a la derecha juntan una de sus patas delanteras ante una cruz griega inscrita en un círculos. Encima tenemos a una pareja de ángeles que portan una voluminosa cruz latina. Estamos evidentemente ante una iconografía que alude al aviso de respeto ante la entrada al lugar sagrado. Dos de los animales del bestiario románico que juegan el papel de protectores del templo son, precisamente, el león y el grifo, que aquí juntan sus patas antes dos signos de cruz."
