Sunken baptismal piscina located in the ruins of the baptistery attached to the north side of the Basilica of St. John the Apostle in Selçuk, near Ephesus. The baptistery itself is shown in the archaeological plans as an octagonal building with internal apses on each side; the sunken piscina has a centre section also octagonal in shape, with two rectangular arms oriented east-west, with a set of stairs at each end; near the sides of the octagonal centre, but separate from it are three square pits, two large and one small; the large ones are lined up symetrically north and south on the central basin, while the smaller pit is located on the north side, west of the large pit, still on the side of the piscina. The inner sides of the piscina are lined with marble (?) plates, some of which are coloured; the steps leading into the piscina are also lined. Although we have no measurements at the moment, the depth of the piscina is such that an average adult stands about waste high, perhaps around three feet.
