Font Notes:
Listed in Glesius (2013) as a late-Gothic font. The present baptismal font in this church is noted and illustrated in H. Peter Brandt's 'Aus der Geschichte der Felsenkirche' [www.felsenkirche-oberstein.de/html/Festschrift.html] [accessed 20 February 2015], who reports it found in the rubble outside the church and restored to it in 1929, furnished with a new baptismal dish and wooden cover; Brandt (ibid.) reports also a baptismal dish [Taufschale] made of brass by a "Nürnberger Beckenschläger"; this object is now displayed in the museum section of the church [cf. infra]. The font consists of a hexagonal basin decorated with a cusped foiled panel on each side of the basin and underbowl, the piping of the sides continuing down the stem to form rectangular panels there, on a moulded lower base also hexagonal. The wooden cover is low pyramidal, also hexagonal, with a Latin-cross finial; it appears modern. In the display cabinets of this church is a lovely baptismal dish [Taufschale] of the late-Gothic period depicting the Temptation and Fall.
