There is an entry for Birmingham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP0786/birmingham/] [accessed 19 February 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 7, 1964) notes: "During the rebuilding of the church of ST. MARTIN, Birmingham, in the 19th century evidence was found of a 12th-century building on the site. [...] There is no mention of a church or a priest at Birmingham in Domesday Book, and the earliest mention of a church was in 1263. [...] In 1873, under the direction of J. A. Chatwin, the whole building with the exception of the tower and spire was carefully demolished and rebuilt in the style of the early 14th century. [...] All the furniture and fittings in the present church are modern. [...] The registers of marriages and burials begin in 1554, those of baptisms in 1555." [NB: we have no information on the font of the original 12th-century church here]. [NB: the other medieval churches now in Birmingham (Deriten, Ergobaston, Ward End) are listed under their own original vilage names in BSI]
