There is an entry for [Old] Milverton [variant spelling] in the Domesday surve [Folio: 239v] [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP2967/old-milverton/] [accessed 4 February 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Building News (Sept., 10, 1880: 312) reports the reopening of this church after a general re-building; it notes: "The reredos and font have been executed by Messrs. Mabey and Co., of London." The article makes no reference to the earlier font of the pre-renovation church. An older font, dated on a plaque attached to it to 1674 is now located in the churchyard; it was replaced by a new font during the 1880 renovation of the church [cf. supra]. The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 6, 1951) notes: "in 1231 Walter Spigurnel claimed the advowson of Milverton Church from the Prior of Kenilworth [...] The old church of ST. JAMES, on the crest of a hill which slopes west and north to the Avon, was a small building, apparently mainly of the 13th century, with chancel, nave with north aisle, and west tower. The VCH entry does not mention a font, nor is a font mentioned in the English Heritage listing [Listing NGR: SP2968767387] (1987). The font that was in the church just before 1880 renovation was discarded and served as a bird-bath before being returned to the church, and placed in the churchyard; it consists of an octagonal basin with curved underbowl chamfer; an inscription on the side is now much eroded; a plaque has been attached to the basin to record the date and its unfortunate history; the basin is raised on a pedestal base that probably has nothing to do do with the original font, roughly square and with a rounded top. The Church of St. Mark, Rugby Road, New Milverton, is a building of the 19th century by G.G. Scott, and has a modern font of alabaster donated by Lady Charles Bertie-Percy.
