Font Notes:
According to SIPA [www.monumentos.pt/Site/APP_PagesUser/SIPA.aspx?id=4275] [accessed 22 December 2014], the church was originally part of a 12th-century female Augustinian monastery, later Benedictine; inside, on the north side of the nave, is a pulpit and the baptismal font [= "Arquitectura religiosa, românica, gótica e maneirista. Mosteiro feminino da Ordem regrante de Santo Agostinho, reaproveitado pela Ordem de São Bento, de que resta a igreja, de nave única, com capela-mor mais estreita e baixa, com contrafortes exteriores. [...] Do lado do Evangelho, um púlpito com guarda em talha dourada, nicho onde se insere a pia baptismal."] The font, located at the west end, north side of the nave, consists of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a plat moulding at the upper rim, with a pattern of flat ribs or slats with inserts all around the underbowl; on a round pedestal base that has a roll moulding above a pattern similar to the one on the underbowl, on a square lower base with graded mouldings. No cover present, but there is a plugged hole in the upper rim that may have been an anchorage spot for an earlier cover. The inner well has a centre drain hole; the basin is not lined. The whole, basin and base, are made of granite; the font is late, probably 16th- or, more likely, 17th-century.
