There are two entries for Nuneaton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP3691/nuneaton/] [accessed 10 December 2014], neither of which mention cleric or church in it. The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 4, 1947) notes: "The parish church of Nuneaton was given by Earl Robert of Leicester to the Norman Abbey of Lyre during the reign of Henry I [i.e., 1100-1135], the gift being confirmed by Henry II in 1155. [...] The large parish church of S[t]. N[icholas] [...] earliest work remaining is of c. 1340, i.e. the south chapel and parts (probably reset material) of the north chapel and aisle. The arcades of the nave and the clearstory are rebuildings and additions of the late 15th century, and the north arcade of the chancel of the early 16th century, when the north chapel was rebuilt. The west tower is an earlier 15th-century addition [...] The font, pulpit, &c., are modern. [...] In the vicarage garden east of the church are many pieces of ancient tracery, &c., from the church, and a damaged bowl, about 2 ft. square, which may possibly have once served as a font." English Heritage [Listing NGR: SP3656091658] (1947) reports a "C19 octagonal stone font" in this church. Guy Pargeter's 1990 'A Brief History of St Nicolas Parish Church Nuneaton' [www.nnwfhs.org.uk/catch-all/articles-3/12-places/297-history-st-nicholas-nuneaton-1] [accessed 10 December 2014] notes: "The font was originally sited in the nave aisle at the West end beneath the two devils carved on the ceiling. One devil is smiting, hoping to take the soul of the unbaptised child. The other is scowling, showing his anger that the child has been baptised." [NB: we have no information on the font of the medieval church here].
