Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary & St Margaret's church, Castle Bromwich. Now a grade 1 listed building, this church was altered around 1726 quite likely under the direction of the owners of the Castle Bromwich Hall properties, to which it is adjacent. The interior still retains large sections of its medieval oak timber frame construction and roof, and a 12th century Norman chapel, all of which have been encased within a brick skin."

This Bromwich is mentioned in the Domesday survey [http://billdargue.jimdo.com/placenames-gazetteer-a-to-y/places-c/castle-bromwich/] [accessed 1 December 2014], though it has not been confirmed that it is exactly the present Castle Bromwich. The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 4, 1947) notes: "The church was originally a chapel in the parish of Aston, and is mentioned as such in 1535. [...] The whole structure was rebuilt in red brick from 1726 to 1731. [...] The furniture is mainly contemporary. [...] The font is of veined grey marble and has a round bowl with gadroon ornament and a baluster stem. [...] The register of baptisms begins in 1619". The Parish web site [www.stmaryandstmargaret.co.uk/history/new_church.aspx] [accessed 1 December 2014] reports: "The church first appears in documentary evidence of 1165, in a charter recording the granting of Castle Bromwich by the manorial overlords, the de Paynel family to Tickford Priory. [...] Another document of 1175 mentions a Norman chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary at Castle Bromwich. [...] Built in local sandstone perhaps in the mid-12th century, the chapel would have been roughly the size of the present chancel. Evidence of the original stonework still survives. [...] The classical-style font of 1731 is of Italian marble."
