There is an entry for Spernall [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP0862/spernall/] [accessed 26 November 2014], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in Notices of the churches of Warwickshire (vol. 2, 1858) notes: "The Church was originally a Chapel to Coughton, and as such passed with the mother Church to the Canons of Studley. In the 2 Henry III [i.e., 1218] it was given up by them to the Nuns of Cokehill [...] The Church, which is dedicated in honour of St. Leonard, has been recently rebuilt [...] The font is also modern shaped". The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 3, 1945) notes: "The church first appears, at the end of the 12th century, as a chapelry of Coughton which belonged to the canons of Studley. [...] The chancel is entirely modern, but the chancel arch is of the 12th century and some of the masonry of the side walls of the nave may be of the same period [...] the font and all the furniture are modern." English Heritage [Listing NGR: SP0864062123] (1967) reports a 20th-century font in this church. The modern font consists of an octagonal basin with plain rounded tapering sides, raised on an octagonal pedestal base with a moulding atop, and a plain octagonal lower base; the wooden cover is also octagonal and modern.
