Longroiva

The entry for this church in the SIPA [www.monumentos.pt/Site/APP_PagesUser/SIPA.aspx?id=7672] [accessed 17 November 2014] reports a visitation on 15 October 1507 by "João Pereira, da Ordem de Cristo", the religious order to which this church belonged, who recommende among other changes, "a colocação de uma pia de água benta e arranjo da cobertura respectiva" [=the installation of a holy-water stoup and its cover]; the recommendation was copied to the bishop of Lamego at the time. The present granite font in this church could very well date from that period; it consists of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a roll moulding at the upper rim, the side themselves with a pattern of broad diagonal ribs; raised on a cylindrical pedestal base decorated with a pattern of slightly diagonal piping. The wooden cover is round, flat and plain, with hasp that locks onto a staple on the side; appears modern.
