Curwen (1932) writes: "The first mention of the church is contained in the institution by Archbishop William Wickwane, of William de Capella, subdeacon and one of the de Hutton family, as rector to the church of Lowther on 7 July, 1280 [...] he church was rebuilt between the years 1682 and 1686 [...] The whole fabric was restored in 1856." English Heritage [Listing NGR: NY5190424454] (1968) notes: "Font c.1686 inscribed TA", the church itself "C12 and Cl3 with extensive late C17 rebuilding; C19 alterations and additions".
