Noted in the museum's web site [http://cms2.niedersachsen.de/portal/live.php?navigation_id=24431&article_id=85025&_psmand=184] [accessed 1 September 2014]: "Ein solcher motivreicher Taufstein befindet sich auch in der Dauerausstellung im Schloss. Das spätromanische Becken wurde aus westfälischem Sandstein um ca. 1260-1280 erstellt und stammt aus der Kirche St. Cosmas und Damian in Wiarden. Der Taufstein besteht aus einem runden Körper, der sich zum Boden hin verjüngt und von einem Sockel getragen wird. Unter dem Beckenrand verläuft ein breites Reliefband aus Ranken, deren eingerollte Triebe Tiere und Fratzen umrahmen. Während die Sockelzone unverziert geblieben ist, trägt die Hauptwandung figürlichen Schmuck. Den Hintergrund dieser Zone bildet ein Rautenmuster mit lanzettförmigen Blütenblättern. Dargestellt sind die Anbetung der Könige, die Taufe Christi, die Kreuzigung und Christus in der Vorhölle, wobei einige der Figuren jedoch stark bestoßen sind. Die Mulde im Stein diente dem Einlassen eines Metallbeckens – dem eigentlichen Taufbecken. Auf dem Rand des Beckens sind noch die Einlassspuren für einen heute fehlenden Deckel zu erkennen. Rudimentäre Spuren einer Fassung sind ebenfalls auszumachen." On-site notes: baptismal font made of Bamberg sandstone, originally from the parish church of St. Cosmas and St. Damian at Wiarden, near Wilhelmshaven. It is now in the permanent collections of the Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte at its Oldenburg Schloss location, where it is dated to between 1260 and 1280; cylindrical basin without a base; nelow the upper rim is a a vine populated with heads, animals and foliated motifs; the body of the basin has a background of lanceolate leaf pattern; around the basin sides are four scenes [L->R]: 1)Crucifixion, with Mary and John at the extreme ends, John holding a book; closer to the cross two smaller figures, the one on the right wearing a Jew hat; are they Stephaton and Longinus?; 2)Harrowing of Hell; 3)Adoration of the Magi before and enthroned Madonna and Child; 4)Baptism of Christ in the Jordan; the Baptist is on the right, his right hand on Christ's head; to the left is the attending angel holding garments. There is no drain hole in the inner well. Considerable damage on the font; big chunk missing at the upper rim where an old metal staple was; its companion is still in place at the opposite end. No cover present.
