Nicholls ([1877?]) reports the first documentary evidence of a church here is in 1336, related to the transfer of the advowson from Torphin to the Priory of Watton in 1336; this early church is reported "pulled down one hundred and twenty-five years ago" [i.e., ca. 1852], and a new church built in 1744 near the site of the old one. There is no font mentioned in Nicholls (ibid.), nor does this author mention the dedication of the church. Curwen (1932) adds that the grant by Thorpin occurred in the reign of Henry II [1154-1189], "The church, however, does not appear to have been appropriated fully before the year 1336." Curwen (ibid.) further reports this church valued in ""Antique Taxatio Ecclesiastica" of Pope Nicholas IV, made in the year 1291". English Heritage [Listing NGR: NY7223004265] (1968) notes: "Stone font at west end of nave has an C18 octagonal bowl on an earlier chamfered stem." The Church of St. Aidan, in Newbiggin-on-Lune, is 19th-century. [NB: we have no information on the font from the mid-12th century church here].
