No entry found in the Domesday survey. Curwen (1932) writes: "Ivo de Tailbois between 1090 and 1097 granted the rectory and advowson of this church, together with many others, to Stephen de Whitby, the first abbot of the newly formed Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary of York. This grant was confirmed between 1120 and 1130 by the Englishman, Ketel son of Elftred. [...] The "Antique Taxatio Ecclesiastica" of Pope Nicholas iv (1291) valued the rectory at £90 and the vicarage at £26. 13. 4. with a pension payable to the Abbot and Convent of 20s. [...] At the dissolution of the monastery, 29 November, 1539, the rectory and the advowson of the vicarage became vested in the Crown". English Heritage [Listing NGR: NY7751708821] (1968) notes that this is a church "probably dedicated to more than one saint originally [...] Rebuilt c1230 with later additions and alterations." The entry for this church in the Cumbria Directory [www.thecumbriadirectory.com] [accessed 28 July 2014] notes: "There are two fonts in the church. One is Victorian and the other earlier. The earlier one has an oak cover designed by James Dent of Ravenstonedale. The organ was built in 1888." The table-top font raised on a broad central shaft and four outer colonnettes is late-19th century. [NB: Curwen (ibid.) reports a number of chapels-of-ease that were built nearby in the 17th century at Mallerstang (St. Mary's, pre-1656), Soulby (1663) and Smardale ([s.d.]); whether these chapels-of-ease had sacramental functions or not is not clear in the source, which only mentions reading and educational functions in them.
