Font Notes:
No individual entry found for this Stretford in the Domesday survey. The entry for this township in the Victoria County History (Lancaster, vol. 4, 1911) notes: "The earliest record of the chapel of Stretford is in a lease of 1413 [...] the chapel was rebuilt in 1718 [...] In 1842 the present church of St. Matthew was consecrated; [...] it was enlarged in 1861"; no font mentioned. The modern font is described and illustrated in the Parish web [www.stretfordstmatthews.com/the-church-building.html] [accessed 23 July 2014]: "The Font is of alabaster and was dedicated on November 3rd 1907 to the memory of the Rev. Dudley Hart, Rector of the parish from 1868 to 1903. Behind can be seen a large oak Memorial to those who lost their lives during the 1914-18 war." The present font, made of toffee-coloured alabaster, has a round-to-cross-shaped basin raised on a broad central shaft and four outer colonnettes; wooden cover with metal cross finial; also modern. [NB: we have ni information of the possible font from the early-15th century chapel here].
