No individual entry found for Gorton in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County History (Lancaster, vol. 4: 1911) notes: "The origin of S[t]. J[ames]'S C[hapel] is unknown. It existed in 1562 [...] In 1755 the chapel was rebuilt, [...] and again in 1871. A district chapelry was assigned to it in 1839. [...] The registers date from 1570." [NB: we have no information on the early font here]
