Scene Description: Source caption: "The present St Peter’s Church was opened in 1844 and enlarged in 1880, although there have been at least two previous churches on the site dating back to 1547 (or possibly even earlier) The boxed pews inside the church were taken from the 1736 building, but it is possible that they may be 16th century in origin."

No individual entry found for Blackley in the Domesday survey. Booker (1854) notes the Byron family chapel here documented ca. 1400. The Victoria County History (Lancaster, vol. 4, 1911) notes: "There was an oratory at Blackley as early as 1360, [...] probably the origin of the chapel existing in 1548. [...] This was rebuilt in 1736, [...] and again in 1844; it is called St. Peter's. [...] The registers begin in 1655." [NB: we have no information on the original font here].
