Font Notes:
Noted in Wolfgang Wendling's article 'Aus den Anfängen des christlichen Abendlands', with a photograph by Werner Dupuis, in the on-line Rhein-Zeitung [www.rhein-zeitung.de/region/die-303-magischen-orte_artikel,-Aus-den-Anfaengen-des-christlichen-Abendlands-_arid,1064240.html#.U7HhtSgvKZR] [accessed 30 June 2014]. A late late-5th century baptistery excavated between 1963 and 1966 beneath the church of St. Severus, with a heptagonal baptismal piscina with a round inner well that is 50 cm in diameter at its narrowest; there is a large drain hole in the bottom, close to a side; four of the original seven 'wings' of the font are still intact, but the other three were affected by the construction of the walls around it; the remaing 'wings' show holes that may have served to accommodate the pillars of a canopy above the piscina. The piscina was at the west end of the original basilica, built here in the late-5th century by the earlier Roman baths.
