Church Notes: original pilgrimage chapel here built 1195; new church with great doorway built 1248; church almost totally destroyed on 21 March 1945 Allied bombing; re-built 1954
On-site notes: baptismal font of [Bamberg sand]stone consisting of a round basin deeply carved with an intricate interlace of acanthus vines and animal bodies at two levels, dragon-like quadrupeds on the upper row, basilisk-like aviand in the row bwlow; the round pedestal base has four couchant-regardant lions arranged at 90-degree angles, the bodies climbing upwards to the basin; the font was probably much damaged in the March 1945 Allied bombing that practically destroyed the church itself. The metal cover is modern and has a dove finial. A photograph of the font before the 1945 bombing exists in the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg, and has been digitised by the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte - Bildarchiv Foto Marburg [Digitales Bild (retrodigitalisiert)] and can be seen at www.bildindex.de/dokumente/html/obj20476577#|home [accessed 29 June 2014]; it shows the font with a medium dome cover of patterned top.
