Scene Description: showing the new baptismal-dish holder bearing the names of the Four Rivers of Paradise: "Seit Ostern hat der Taufstein eine schmiedeeiserne Halterung für die Schale. [https://www.kirchengemeinde-loccum.de/Zur-Sache/Themen/Taufe] [accessed 24 November 2-23]

Noted and illustrated in Speitel (1983) as a Renaissance baptismal font of ca. 1600, probably by the sculptor Kleffemeier of Obernkirchen and the painter Mattemann of Minden, like the font at Marienkirche Minden. On the occasion of a installation on the font of new baptismal-dish holder bearing the names of the Four Rivers of Paradise the Ev.-luth. Kirchengemeinde Loccum [https://www.kirchengemeinde-loccum.de/Zur-Sache/Themen/Taufe] [accessed 24 November 2024] notes that the inscription on the upper basin sides identifies Abbot Stracke [aka Stracke] as responsible for having the font made in 1601 by Henrich Klevemeyer Obernkirchen. The font consists of an octagonal basin with deeply carved and heavily decorated sides; among the decorations are a set of arches containing effigies of saints identified by inscriptions in the arch-heads as Apostles; there is another inscription in larger characters just below the upper rim, a German version of Mat. 28:19; balusters with figures at every other side; the lower basin side and underbowl heavily decorated with fruit and foliage motifs; on a round pedestal decorated with human figures, animals, etc. No cover present.
