Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in Speitel (1983) as a Renaissance baptismal font of 1598 probably by the sculptor Kleffemeier of Obernkirchen and the painter Mattemann of Minden, like the similar font at Klosterkirche Loccum. The font consists of an octagonal basin with deeply carved and heavily decorated and painted sides; among the decorations are a set of arches containing effigies of saints identified by inscription in the arch-heads; there is another inscription in larger characters just below the uppr rim; balusters with figures at every other side; the lower basin side and underbowl heavily decorated with fruit and foliage motifs; on a round pedestal decorated with human figures, animals, etc. No cover apparent but uses a baptismal dish, as is comon practice in these areas. Damaged, with some parts broken off. Noted in the German Wikipedia entry for this church [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marienkirche_(Minden)] [accesdsed 27 February 2026]: "Der Renaissance-Taufstein von 1598 stammt wahrscheinlich von Bildhauer Kleffemeier aus Obernkirchen und Malermeister Mattemann aus Minden", with reference to Speitel [cf. supra]. A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of13 February 2026) informs: "Kloster Sankt Marien, Minden, 1598.
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marienkirche_(Minden) -- According to Jürgen Giszas, the font of Minden (1598) was the inspiration for the font 19307LOC at Loccum (1601).
