The present font dates fom 1957, the work of sculptor Gisela Leo-Stellbrink; the 1999 bronze cover by Werner Rösner and Ingrid Möhlmann. The previous font was a hexagonal Baroque exhuberance in wood, dating from the 17th century; the over-ornate basin was dwarfed by a towering cover crowded with putti heads, folitaed scrolls, finial urns, etc.; the huge cover was operated from a large metal bracket secured to the wall near it [NB: fragments of the destroyed 17th-century font can be seen in the Domschatzkammer and the Lapidarium des Westwerks]. [NB: we have no information on the earlier fonts of the church goung back to Carolingian times]
