Church Notes: the original Benedictine abbey may have dated to the late-6thC -- present 12thC Cistercian abbey is listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00090257]: " L'abbaye cistercienne du Relecq fut fondée le 30 juillet 1132 par sept moines provenant de l'abbaye de Bégar. L'église actuelle date pour la majeure partie de cette époque, mais elle a subi des remaniements : percement de baies dans le collatéral nord et dans les chapelles latérales du choeur au 13e siècle, percement de baies dans le collatéral sud, réfection des pignons du même collatéral et du choeur à la fin du 15e siècle, et enfin, démolition des deux premières travées de la nef et reconstruction de la façade occidentale en 1785. Les bâtiments abbatiaux du 17e siècle ne subsistent plus qu'à l'état de vestiges."

The object is believed to have been a former capital from the cloister of the old abbey, re-cycled at a later date for use as holy-water stoup inside the church; the basin is square with tapering sides decorated with foliage motifs below a double moulding around the upper rim; it is raised ona a square pedestal base made of two blocks. Noted and illustrated in Abbaye du Relecq (1995). In its entry of this abbey InfoBretagne [www.infobretagne.com/abbaye_du_relecq.htm] [accessed 24 June 2014] notes: "Quelques vestiges, quelques traces que l'on remarque sur les murs semblent indiquer que les colonnettes et les arcades étaient du XIIIème siècle, et cela semble confirmé par un bénitier intérieur creusé dans deux chapiteaux jumelés qui ont toute l'apparence de provenir de ce cloître." There is a second stoup, now built into a wall, but we have no information on its date.
