Described and illustrated in Wulf (1996) as an octagonal baptismal font dates from the mid-12th century; the panels of the basin sides contain Christ in Majesty, in a mandorla held by angels, the Nativity, the Ascension and a scene of Christ on the cross between Mary and John the Evangelist. Described and illustrated in Klaus Donndorf [www.donndorf-online.de/Reisen/Romanik.html] [accessed 19 May 2014]: Romanesque baptismal font made around 1150 located at the west end of the crypt, but points out that it is not the original font of this church; it was the font of the demolished church of Großalsleben [aka Großalsleben], brought to Gernrode 1865. Catalogued and illustrated in Schlegel (2012) as a sandstone font of the second half of the century, originally from Alsleben; the short platform or base on which the Romanesque basin stands is modern, of the 1860s restoration of the church; scenes are identified in Schlegel (ibid.) [R->L]: 1) Nativity; 2) Ascension; 3) Virgin Mary; 4) Crucifxion; 5) John the Evangelist; 6) Angel holding book in the left hand; 7) Christ in Majesty; 8) Angel holding book in the left hand. The font is a monolithic octagon with tapering sides decorated with niches or mandorle populated by figures or scenes: the life of Christ, the Crucifixion, Assumption, Nativity, and a Majestas Domini; the moulded lower end is decorated with a zig-zag pattern with bead motif, with palmettes and foliage in the interstices. On-site notes: iconographic programme as described in Schlegel confirmed; basin is octagonal inside and out; there is no cover present but the extensive rim damage suggests deep-set anchorings from an earlier cover; there appears to have been originally a centre drain in the inner basin but it has been blocked; the nicely carved base is a modern replacement [NB: the west end of the church was extremely dark during our visit; we were forced to work by flash-light even to read the settings]. [NB: we have no information on the original font from the mid-10th century church here]. There is a large stone vessel in the gardens of the church; it is locally described as a "Wasserbehälter", or water tank, but the Index of Christian Art [http://ica.princeton.edu/hayward/display.php?country=Germany&site=693&view=site&page=1&image=1952] [accessed 19 May 2014] has it labelled: "Country: Germany -- Site: Gernrode: Church, St. Cyriakus -- Medium: Sculpture -- Date: 11c. -- Subject: Ornament: figured -- Baptismal Font].
