There is an entry for Bircham [Newton] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF7633/bircham-newton/] [accessed 31 March 2014], which reports a church and church lands in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "Called in the Book of Domesday, Niwetuna, or Newton, [...] the additional name of Bircham was afterwards made use of to distinguish it from other Newtons [...] There was a church endowed with 20 acres of land [...] The Church is dedicated to All-Saints. In the reign of Edward I. the rector had a manse, with 50 acres of land". The font is a rectangular basin with damaged tapering sides, raised on a broad rectangular plinth with kneeling stone; it is located at the west end of the nave.
