Church Notes: 12thC church -- listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00115894]: "Belle et vaste église qui conserve pour l'essentiel ses techniques médiévales. Siège d'un important chapitre, au milieu d'un centre historique bien conservé. Choeur de la fin du 12e siècle. Elévation à trois étages : fenêtres basses, tribune aux baies géminées, fenêtres hautes. Transept du 14e siècle. Murs de la nef reconstruits en briques en 1607. Façade ouest et piliers de la nef du 13e siècle, restaurés à la fin du 19e siècle. A l'angle ouest du transept nord, tourelle en encorbellement." -- Two other churches existed here: one, dedicated to St. Mary was on the left banks of the Serre river; the other, Sainte-Catherine, became to twon hall.

Described amd illustrated by G. Ralliet's Les fonts baptismaux romans de l'Eglise Collégiale Saint-Laurent de Rozoy-sur-Serre (Aisne), in Sur nos fonts baptismaux: Symbolique et Sauvegarde (p. 136-145), with references to a few earlier sources (1446, 1669, etc.); the article includes measurements and gives the material as "Aspect d'un marbre noir, très-dur". Listed in Palissy [ref.: Palissy) : PM02001012]: "Fonts baptismaux [...] Cuve quadrangulaire reposant sur un fût monocylindrique flanqué de quatre colonnettes portées sur un socle rectangulaire [...] 12e siècle [...] H = 95 ; la = 85". Illustrated in Mémoire [ref.: AP80L030120, AP80L030121, AP80L030122, AP80L030123, AP80L030124 and AP80L030125]. Baptismal font of Tournai, consisting of a square basin decorated with an acanthus vine bearing arum fruit on each of the four sides; semi-hidden in the spandrels of the vine are an upside-down lion head (in the lower spandrel) and a trefoiled motif (in the upper spandrel; the upper surface of the rim, both the spandrels and around the round well, is decorated with foliage motifs; raised on a broad central shaft and four outer columns the capitals of which are bulges on the underbowl decorated with large leaves; the columns themselves are plain but the bases are formed by large mouldings, the ones at the angles decorated with a leaf motif; the lower volume of the lower base is square and plain. The wooden cover is round and flat, and appears plain. This is an excellent example of the Tournai font production, and well preserved to boot. An article by Les Amis de Rozoy et de sa Collégiale (décembre 2011) [www.genealogie-aisne.com/old_genealogie/articles/rozoyfonts.pdf] [accessed 5 January 2014] informs of the changes made to the font, its location and environment; it is argued that the font was in place by 1446, although the reference is to a font, not necessarily this font. It informs that on 29 March 2011 the font was moved from the west end of the nave, south of the entranceway, to the north transept, between the chapels of Notre-Dame de Lourdes and that of La Vierge, and states that the font had been moved previously in 1607 when the church became parochial. The 2011 move was part of the opening the entranceway to meet legislation related to access for people with disabilities.
