Nomdieu

The present baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin made of plaster and profusely decorated with foral and foliage motifs, raised on a round stone pedestal base and a moulded lower base of the same shape, and a tiny octagonal plinth; dated to the 19th century [cf. infra]. There is, also in the nave, a stone holy-water stoup consisting of a hemispherical basin, plain except for a pronounced roll moulding at the upper rim, raised on a plain cylindrical pedestal base; this object is claimed locally [cf. infra] to have been the ancient baptismal font of this church, later made into a stoup. Its is not ancient in any regard, certainly no earlier than the 17th century and it is listed in Palissy [ref.: IM47001096] as probably 18th-century: "Fonts baptismaux transformés en bénitier (trou d'évacuation bouché) ; il manque le couvercle (traces de serrure à moraillon) ; socle remplacé ; pierre épaufrée (pied, cuve). [...] 18e siècle (?)". Les fonts baptismaux de l’église du Nomdieu sont placés dans la nef. Ils ont été réalisés en plâtre dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. La cuve baptismale, destinée à contenir l’eau bénite du baptême, est une cuve octogonale dont le volume intérieur est circulaire. Elle est divisée à l’intérieur en trois compartiments et dotée d’un trou d’évacuation. Elle est ornée, sur sa face extérieure, de feuillage en lambrequins. La cuve repose sur un pied cylindrique, lui-même posé sur un socle octogonal. Le pied prend la forme d’une colonne au fût cannelé surmonté d’un chapiteau feuillagé. Ce meuble a remplacé des fonts baptismaux plus anciens. Ils ont été transformés en bénitier." [NB: we have no information on the font of the original 12th-13th church here]
