Church Notes: pilgrimage church on the Santiago route -- 11th and 12thC church listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA40000017]: "Eglise bâtie aux 11e-12e siècles sur l'emplacement d'un établissement antique dont elle remploie les matériaux. Après les démolitions dues aux guerres de Religion, l'église a été restaurée. L'édifice se compose d'une nef unique et d'un chevet à trois absides. [...] L'appareil d'époque romane sur le chevet présente des marques de tâcherons ainsi que des graffiti."

Several local popular sources, including the one cited below, describe the font here as Carolingian, but there is no particular factor to account for such early dating. The font here is a round almost cylindrical tub built into a corner of the wall, but was probably detached originally; the inner well is also round; the upper sides of the basin are decorated with a wide band of chequered pattern; the upper surface of the rim has a double groove all around; the damage to that area would be related to the cover hardware anchoring. The appearance of the font is consistent with the date of the building iteself, 11th-12th century. Noted and illustrated in Visites Aquitaine [http://visites.aquitaine.fr/fonts-baptismaux-de-l-eglise-saint-jacques] [accessed 22 December 2013]: "Sensacq possède une petite église romane isolée [...] L’église Saint-Jacques de Sensacq abrite des fonts baptismaux qui seraient d’origine carolingienne. Il s’agit d’une ancienne cuve cylindrique de 80 centimètres de diamètre sur 80 centimètres de haut, taillée dans la molasse et ornée, en son rebord supérieur, de quatre rangées de billettes. En leur état actuel, ces fonts baptismaux sont scellés au mur par un muret de ciment, ce qui ne laisse visible qu’une moitié de la cuve."
