INFORMATION
FontID: 18877BOC
Church/Chapel: Propsteikirche St. Peter und Paul
Church Patron Saints: St. Peter & St. Paul
Church Location: Bleichstrasse 12, 44787 Bochum -- Tel.: 0234-14715
Country Name: Germany
Location: Arnsberg, Nordrhein-Westfalen
Ecclesiastic Region: Bistum Essen
Historical Region: Ruhrhöhen -- Ruhrgebiet -- Preußen
Font Location in Church: Inside the church, in a baptismal chapel off the N aisle, E end, beneath the organ loft
Date: ca. 1175?
Century and Period: 12th century (late?), Late Romanesque
Workshop/Group/Artisan: Westphalian cylinder font
Cognate Fonts: the font from Georgskirche. Aplerbeck
On-site notes: the baptismal font of this church consists of an old late-12th century (?) basin raised on a modern pedestal base; the sides of the cylindrical basin are decorated with an arcade of round arches that has only two columns in the whole arcade; framed by the round arch-heads are scenes of [left->right]: Crucifixion of Christ -> Baptism of Christ in the Jordan -> Nativity -> Adoration of the Magi -> Massacre of the Innocent with Herod enthroned present; there are simple roll mouldings at the upper rim and lower end; below the upper rim is a frieze of palmette motif with tied pairs of foliage motifs, all of it sandwiched between two rows of beads. The font cover, a modern metal low-dome shape, has rectangular partitions all over the upper surface; opaque glass beads around the outer edge, a larger one as finial; the cover is attached to the upper rim of the basin, and a small lid at the centre opens for access to the little basin that holds the water; there is no access o the interior of the basin, and therefore no measurements were taken at the time of our visit. The sandstone font from Georgskirche in Aplerbeck [cf. Index entry] is probably by the same workshop or master, similar though not identical, as the scenes are not the same, but much damaged around the top, above the Nativity scene and to its left.
