Malejan / Maleján

Described and illustrated in Aguilera Hernández and Adiego Sevilla (2013). Baptismal font consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin, plain but for a set of mouldings below the upper rim; raised on a moulded pedestal font, also round; according to the same source, the font was painted in 1897at a cost of "8 pesetas". The font has undergone repairs and changes, the first one being documented quite early, only about thrity years after its installation in the church. By 1781 it must have been in a sorry state because there is a proposal from a stonemason from nearby Epila to replace it with "una nueva pila bautismal en piedra campanal for valor de 40 escudos" The font, unless it is the later replacement offered above, would date from the original church here, the 1560s. The font cover is a wooden dome with orb-and-cross finial; 19th-century?
