Church Notes: church deemed ruinous in 1821, was re-built between 1827 and 1835
There appear to be two baptismal fonts in this church, although one is locally referred to as "bénitier" and is probably from the other church in this village/hamlet; the font here is somewhat similar to the so-called stoup in the tower porch, but has been fully carved while the 'stoup' is much simply ornamented; the basin of this font has fully carved masks on the protrusions of the basin and has a more square form, the sides carved with lozenge pattern on the upper half and with a blank arcade of round arches all around; the underbowl has the capitals of the base supports with ball motifs on them; the base here consists of a broad central shaft and four outer colonnettes at the corners, and those and the lower base appear to be original, with the mouldings on the square lower base corresponding to the shafts, as with other northern French and English fonts of the 12th and 13th centuries. Listed in Palissy [ref.: PM22000815]: "fonts baptismaux [...] granite [...] La cuve principale est décorée de mascarons aux angles, de losanges et d'une petite arcature sur les côtés [...] 13e siècle". The [www.pleslin-trigavou.fr/fr/314.aspx] [accessed 29 October 2013] notes: "Donnée en 1821 comme étant en ruine et dangereuse, entre 1827 et 1835 l'église de Pleslin sera entièrement reconstruite. Les fonts baptismaux et le bénitier du 12e et 13e siècles (classés monuments historiques) sont des pièces qui peuvent témoigner de l'ancienneté de cette église. Du 18e siècle, l'aigle du lutrin et les transepts sont également inscrits monuments historiques. Cette église est placée sous la protection de Saint Pierre. [...] 12e siècle : fonts baptismaux.
12e - 13e : bénitier aux angles sculptés d'un mascaron et aux rebords usés par de profondes encoches produites par l'affûtage de faucilles après trempage dans l'eau bénite (la faucille ainsi traitée devait assurer une meilleure récolte de blé). Cette coutume oubliée allait bien au-delà des croyances."
