Baptismal font dated by an inscription to 1592 listed and illustrated in the Deutsche Inschriften Online [www.inschriften.net, urn:nbn:de:0238-di083g015k0012506.] [accessed 6 November 2022]: made of grey sandstone and located now in the eastern part of the south ambulatory, previously [until 1840) at the west end of the nave and, for a time, exiled to the church garden; the inscription includes the date and a maker's mark; of the four coats of arms some are sculpted, some painted; restored; the DIO (ibid) identifies the four cotas of arms: Kloster Amelungsborn, Abt Vitus Busch, Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and Bistum Halberstadt, and informs that the baptismal dish and the railing that surrounded the font when it was located at the west end of the nave, were stolen probably during the Thirty Years' War. The present font in this church is noted and illustrated in Lampe & Willing (2012); they note the inscription with the date 1592 in it, and identify the four coats of arms on the alternate sides: 1)Kloster Amelungsborn; 2)Ant. Vitus Busch; 3)Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel; 4)Bistum Halberstadt. The Abbey's information site states that there were no baptisms carried out in its church until it was open to the villagers after 1530, during the incumbency of abbot Andreas Steinhauer; the font is described as made of grey sandstone in the Renaissance style, consisting of an octagonal basin the sides of which are four carved and painted scrollwork cartouches inscribing shields bearing 1)the abbey arms, 2)the arms of abbot Vitus Buch (1588-1598), 3)Braunschweigs [Brunswick] arms, and 4)arms of Halberstadt and duke Heinrich Julius, who was also a bishop [cf. supra]; the year 1592 appears inscribed as well; the other four sides have the cartouche frames with assorted motifs in them; the upper rim area has graded moulding; there is a band of floral motif at the neck' between basin and base; the pedestal base is formed by eight scrolls around a central shaft, adorned with angel heads, floral and foliage motifs, on an octagonal lower base with graded moulding atop, and lozenge motifs on the sides. All brightly painted, from top to bottom. Low-dome cover, modern. [NB: just because there may not have been baptisms in the abbey church until it became parochial it does not exclude the presence of a font as early as its foundation]
