Church Notes: church listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00101033] -- "Une petite église, dédiée à Saint-Georges, fut remplacée par cette abbaye, bâtie entre 1050 et 1066 par Raoul de Tancarville, chambellan, ancien gouverneur de Guillaume le Conquérant. La belle abbatiale (monument historique), aujourd’hui l’église du village, est également de ce temps. [...] église avait d’abord été destinée à des chanoines réguliers. Mais ils n’en jouirent pas un demi-siècle : car leur vie peu édifiante les fit chasser en 1114, et remplacer par dix moines bénédictins tirés de Saint-Evroult (Orne). Ce fut seulement alors que la collégiale de Saint-Georges prit le titre d’abbaye." Font Notes: Click to view font notes

The present font is of neo-Romanesque design, a square basin with decorated sides, raised on five clustered supports with capitals and bases and a square lower base. It has a simple font cover, of wood, flat and round, with a knob handle decorated with a single flower. This modern font is disused and is located in a western chapel of the north aisle. A late font of the late-20th century, and now the font in use, is located in the south side of the chancel; it is an unfortunate choice, a sort-of side table in a style more appropriate for an outdated living room of the 1970s than for the magnificent environment of this abbey church. [NB: we have no information on the baptismal font of the original collegiate church here].
