Two bronze holy-water stoups of the 15th century are listed in Palissy [ref.: PM58000565]: "Vasques en forme de mortiers, peu évasées et munies de quatre anses. The stoups are of the bucket-shape design, comon in this area of France; these two stoups are provided with four ear-type handles each at 90-degree angles; there are old chain links hanging from the handles, which may indicate there may have been a cover on them; the decorative elements, as described above, contain several motifs, symbols and scenes (?); around the side of the upper rim is an inscription [transcription not available]; the other ornaments are arranged horizontally, sandwiched between three sets of thin parallel mouldings; the figure on a cloud (?) appears to have been repeated through the cast; the scenes inside the rectangular 'médaillons' are different; one of them may represent the Crucifixion. The metal stoups are set atop square-to-octagonal stone pillars. The site http://histoiresdedecize.pagesperso-orange.fr/SAINT-ARE1/SAINT-ARE2_en_double.htm [accessed 3 August 2013] quotes from an inventoy carried out in 1906 ["Le 19 janvier 1906, M. Sanglé-Ferrière, receveur des domaines et contributions de Decize, se rend à l'église Saint-Aré. This inventory includes a "Bénitier entrée classé" and "Fonts baptismaux, intérieur garni en zinc sur pied scellé en pierre", valued as a pair 100 Francs. The holy-water stoup is one of the two found here now, but there is no reference to a second stoup in the inventory of 1906.
