Noted and illustrated in Région Aquitaine [http://visites.aquitaine.fr/chapiteau-benitier-de-l-eglise-notre-dame] [accessed 28 Juky 2013] as a font or stoup carved out of a Gallo-Roman capital discovered in 1908 in the rectory/vicarage near the church; it was later placed in the porch. The same site [cf. supra], which cites the historian Pierre Bistaudeau as source, reports that the capital came from the 'villa des Gogues', situated in the municipality of Bourg, a few kms from Bayon-sur-Gironde; the villa had belonged to the late-4th century writer Ausone. The font or stoup consists of the said capital, the sides of which are busily covered in foliage, raised on a moulded round-to-square lower base. It appears now in disuse, serving as planter inside the entrance to the church.
