INFORMATION

FontID: 18551PAU
Church/Chapel: Eglise Saint-Timothée
Church Patron Saints: St. Timothy
Country Name: France
Location: Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Directions to Site: Located on the RD-93, 9 km W of Brantôme, 19 km NE of Ribérac
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocèse Périgueux - Sarlat
Historical Region: Val de Dronne -- Périgord
Century and Period: 12th century, Romanesque
Church Notes: church listed in Mérimée [ref.: PA00082722 and IA24000463]: "Eglise à coupoles construite durant la seconde moitié du 12e siècle [...] Le choeur est surmonté d'un clocher couvert en pavillon par de la tuile plate [...] L'église appartient à la série des églises à coupoles sur pendentifs, nombreuses dans la région entre Angoulême et Périgueux. Elle a été fortifiée au 13e ou 14e siècle par l'addition de mâchicoulis."
The church contains a relatively modern holy-water stoup consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin the sides of which are decorated with garlands, saw-tooth and a moulding; raised on a round pedestal base of baluster shape decorated with mouldings. This stoup is listed and illustrated in the database Mémoire as a "Bénitier" [=stoup], yet it appears in their 1920 Meys' photograph [ref.: MH0032247 -- APMH00032247] with a dome cover on it as if it were a baptismal font [was it being used as one at the time of the Mémoire photograph?]. [NB: we have no information on the font of the medieval church here]
