view of basin - interior

Scene Description: the internal division of the basin well and the absence of traces of old cover hardware suggest a late date for the font, perhaps 1690, the date of the establishment of the parish

The present baptismal font in this church was originally at the cathedral of Salamanca, and was received within the last 67 years in exchange for one sent from this church to the cathedral [source: personal communication to BSI from the parish priest -via Dr. Rafael Mateos Dorado-, email of 4 April 2013]. The present font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a thick roll moulding at the upper rim, and diagonal ribbed pattern on the side and underbowl; raised on a squat round-to-square base; the inner well is divided by a vertical partition that reaches about one half of the depth of the well. The internal partition of the basin well and the absence of traces of old cover hardware suggest a late date for the font, perhaps 1690, the date of the establishment of the parish.
