A church dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen is noted in Martin (1779), Blomefield (1805-1810) and in Taylor's Index Monasticus of 1821, a parish church before it was converted into an hospital"; it was afterwards united to St. Cuthbert's. The foundation of the original church is reported in the reign of Henry III, i.e., 1216-1272. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original church].
