The entry for this church in InfoBretagne [www.infobretagne.com/lezardrieux.htm] [accessed 1 March 2013] notes: " l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste (1580, 1749/1758), agrandie au XVIIIème siècle. On suppose qu’elle occupe l’emplacement d’un prieuré qui dépendait de l’abbaye de Saint-Jacut (ou Saint-Jagu). Il peut s'agir également de l'ancienne chapelle castrale signalée dès le XVème siècle possédant déjà des fonts baptismaux et un cimetière." The baptismal font in this church is, like may others in the area, made of granite, but, unlike many of those in the surrounding area, it is a single-basin font; it consists of an octagobal basin with a thick roll moulding at the upper rim, then slightly tapering in; tapering also at the plain underbowl; raised on a plain octagonal pedestal base. The font is quite likely from the earlier period of the church [cf. supra]. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with a round sub-lid in the centre that is hinged for access to the basin interior. [NB: the baptistery enclosure where the font is located was locked at the time of our visit, and we could not gain access for measurements, inspection of the basin interior, etc.] Also inside this church is a rectangular stone object with a very shallow inner basin; we do not know whether this was ever used for baptism- related purposes. The 'sablières' that remain in this church are located in the chancel, by the upper sides of the main altar, and are 16th-century.
