Additional Comments: if/when the cemented part is removed the rest of the carving may throw some light into the reading of what is on the north side of the basin
Font Notes:
Tub-shaped baptismal font cemented to the southwest corner of the nave, beneath the west gallery; the basin is round and tapers towards the bottom; it appears to be raised on a base or plinth, although it is not clear how much much of the latter is part of the cemented part; only part of the basin is visible, the rest hidden in the cemented part; the north side of the font is decorated with a strange arrangement of motifs: a saw-tooth shape at the bottom is linked to a similar shape at the upper rim, the upper area actually cut off the stone of the side of the rim; in one of the angles of the saw-tooth below is a shape resembling a human body, one arm akimbo (?), the other holding or touching a Latin cross (trefflee?); whatever else there may be is hidden in the cemented part. A modern rim-buffet canopy has been mounted on the font, its wide doors opening onto the north side; curiously the canopy includes a shelf on which to keep the baptismal vials, etc., supposedly. [cf. Index entry for Leres No. 2 for an even more bizarre object in this church].
