The old church, now in ruins by the later one, was still standing ca. 1870 and is described in Wilson's 1870 Imperial Gazetter: "The old parochial church is a plain edifice of nave, S aisle, and chancel, with porch, vestry, and low tower". Harrison (1920) reports: "The E[arly] E[nglish] church (13th c.) is in ruins ; but the old font has been placed in the partially restored tower." The Sussex Parish Churches site [www.sussexparishchurches.org/content/view/226/34/] [accessed 30 January 2013] informs: "A broken font, probably C12, is kept in the tower."
