Ladipo (2002) notes that there may have been a pre-Conquest church here, as "By 1150, Theobald, Archbishop of Canterbury[,] has completed a new Collegiate Church in Malling to replace the existing building [...] It is generally accepted that this new medieval church was built on the site where the present church now stands". Ladipo reports the consecration of a new "small and simple" church here on 23 May 1632, and Harrison (1920) gives a vague date for it around 1627, with a restoration date in 1874. Neither of these authors mentions a font in this church but the present one, a small octagonal object, may be the original of the 17th-century church. There is a "Photograph of a pencil sketch of the interior of South Malling church looking west PAR419/7/4/10 [c1870]" at the East Sussex Records office [www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=179-par419-ead&cid=6-4-10#6-4-10] [accessed 24 January 2013] [NB: we have no information on the fonts of any the churches here].
