Font Notes:
Harrison (1920) notes the 1859 church restoration here but mentions no font in it. The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 4, 1953) notes: "The north arcade and north chapel are of the 13th century, the south chapel perhaps of the 14th, the tower is of the 15th, the rest is 19th-century reconstruction. [...] The registers begin in 1564"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this church." There is n mention of a font in the VCH entry for this church. A note in the Brighton Gazette (issue of 10th March 1859), transcribed in https://sites.google.com/site/funtingtonarchive/general-history/restoration-of-funtington-church [accessed 19 September 2012] entitled 'Restoration and Re-Opening of Funtington Church' notes: "Among other things worthy of note, the font may not be passed over. It is, as to style, of a very early period, is of Caen stone, supported by red Devonshire marble columns, with plinths of a blue marble, and is beautifully carved. This piece of work was executed by Kitson, of Chichester, to the architects’ design, the carving by Nicholls of London. The carved oak cover by Hart, of London." Obviously the reference is to a modern, probably Victorian font newly installed around the publication date of the article.
